Decorating for Spring with Pillows

Freshening the house for Spring can be so fun. Decorating elements don’t have to cost anything – bring in a bouquet of fresh-cut flowers from the your neighbor’s yard or decorate the coffee table with some natural elements (rocks, pine cones, budding tree branches) brought in from outdoors. My favorite seasonal decorating trick is to perk up the room with Spring color, using new throw pillows – that is probably the quickest way to do a room makeover. Pillows give an instant facelift to any room, by hardly lifting a finger. So go ahead, store those pillows that came with the sofa and put out new accent pillows that will make a refreshing statement. Especially quick and affordable are pillow covers that you easily ZIP over your old existing pillows. I love that it is that simple to change the whole mood of a room!

At Christmas I posted about my holiday decor leaning into the simplistic Scandinavian style. Then when we made a visit to IKEA (Phoenix) in January, Oh my gosh, I love that store, I almost fell over from all the leaning intoI picked up a couple of pillow covers that have a Scandi style print.

Originally, I thought I would use the pillows in a guest room redo along with some other pillows and items I am hoarding collecting. But in the meantime I pulled all of them out for my Spring Refresh of the living room. I particularly like pillow COVERS because I don’t have to store the unused pillows…I just cover them with the new ones, then when done, off they go, easy to store folded instead of big puffy pillows stuffed inside the closet.

My new Ikea pillow cover colors; green, golden, black and grays, work perfect in the living room even though the room has blues too! I brought in two other black & white IKEA pillows from other rooms and then covered the cushion on the rattan chair with some remnant green & white ticking fabric to continue green to that side of the room. The new mix of colors & fabrics create a Fresh Spring look to the room. I repeated the green Spring palette in other rooms by using shades of green in towels, candles, placemats and cushions. So Fresh & So SIMPLE!

Since accent (aka: throw) pillows come in so many colors & patterns, you can easily find pillows to fit any colour palette and decor style. Pillows are not a big cost commitment yet have such a style impact. Unlike furniture, large rugs and paint; pillows are quick and cheap to change-out each season. I usually get my pillows at Home Goods, but Ikea is the place to get pillow covers and inserts – they are dirt cheap. I paid $4. each for the two pillow covers shown on my sofa.

To create a woodsy natural coffee table, I brought in the birch candles I used at Christmas HERE and the faux flowers & twigs from another room. The vintage book planter is from a recent DIY post HERE.

Take a look at the cheery photo above, it is from a Ballard Design article, Guide to Choosing Throw Pillows, see more photos using this same room setup (sofa, lamp and rug) with only a change in the pillows and wall art. It clearly shows how pillows can help change a room’s mood. You can read it HERE.
